Andy Sandler or something? I can't really remember his name but we watched a 15 minute clip he did on a passage in Mark 10:17-23.
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'" 20 "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. Later we all piled into Kev's van and headed out to the Sport's Dome to hit some balls at the driving range. We were all horrible to say the least, but Nick was getting a hang of it and Montana seemed like a pro golfer! Way to go guys!
Then they headed up Mount Mckay, our youth group favourite spot, since it was such a beautiful night. Thanks for the good time, guys :)

Uhm.. ouch

Well hey we had an interesting youth group yesterday! Kev took us all out paintballing, and we got out a huge group of people, it was great! There were about.. I dunno twenty of us. We played a couple rounds of just killing each other, and one of capture the flag. At one point we challenged the "pro" paintballers there...20 to 8. Let's just say we're all severely bruised now. My right leg has like 6 purple and red bumps on it now, but it was worth it. Good times!!
Kev's Bible study was from Luke, talking about when Jesus was on the cross with the two prisoners, how both of them treated Jesus. One treated Jesus with mockery and wanted Jesus to save them and himself. The other asked "Do you not fear God, when you share the same fate as him?" to the first man. He then asked Jesus to remember him when they die, and Jesus promised the man a home in heaven that day.
Okay so I can't remember the whole thing right now, it'll come to me later. But yes, good youth group, good perogies, good welts.

Youth next week will be held at the church at 6pm!

Hello Again!

Youth group is back in session!!

Last night a few of us got together at Kev's house and had a Bible Study and talked about what we want to do for the new year. We all have some pretty great and crazy ideas, but we still aren't 100% on what we're gonna do, but we'll figure it out. There is going to be no youth group next week though because Kevin is going to be out of town.

If you have any suggestions on how you want youth group to go this year, parents and kids, please comment or contact myself, Juanita, or Kevin!

Our Last Youth for the Summer

Awwww it was our last youth group. *sniff sniff* lol and it was a FABULOUS time. Most of us got to meet Ann and she's such a sweetheart. Well we made food that I can't even pronounce lol but was SOOOO GOOD! We met a cool guy Mitch and Neil introduced us to a brand new province called P.I.E. Greg told some pretty funny stories during supper time i must say!

Well then we went to the Drop Inn and got to see where Ann worked. We had some pretty intense fooseball games, and piano wars lol!

Ann gave us a talk on her life and what she's gone through. She encouraged us to remember that the issues that we face in our life and just as important as anyone elses and to not tell ourselves the lies that we use as an excuse.

Bones and Bears

WELL WELL I have to say Kevin's new van is absolutely LOVELY! Well after the group came and picked me up in the spiffy new van, we went to Kevin's dad's new house. Kevin was trying to get us to go near the bees and I have to say i wasn't partial to them. Anyways then we went for a walk in the back and found bones that were picked clean. Kinda creepy. Well we made it to the river and Neil got stuck on the other side. Kevin got us lost on the way back, but eventually we used our amazing directional skills to make it back. After grabbing some chips we went back to the church and pigged out like every week.

On our last youth group for the summer we will be having a FABULOUS dinner. I think its May 26th. It'll be a bit of a potluck and more details on this will be posted eventually.

Hey guys!!!! This would have been an awesome week to post pictures, but Kevin forgot his camera in the car...sorry to disappoint.

I think we all met at the church half an hour before Kevin got there, so we had a party! WOO. Hahaha not really. The lesson was basically based around the verse "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse." found in Romans 12:14. We also discussed who were the people that were blessed, and the people that are cursed and found that we could achieve none of the blessing except through Jesus. (There were several other verses we went through, but I'll write them later. Bad memory.)

Cascades!!!! It was alot of fun racing on the rocks and getting lost. Chad ended up going swimming in the river in just his underwear... hmm. We later went to Wal-Mart (do we do this alot?) to buy some random stuff for Kev, then went to the church to play Wii!!!! Unfortunately we all had to go by the time we got it set up.

Ahaa welll that was an interesting experience with lamb. Although last years lamb was FABULOUS, this year at our passover dinner, it wasn't so great. But the "unleaven" bread deffinitely made up for it. Of course making unleaven bread is supposed to be a fast thing, we took about 2 hours to make ours, considering we deepfried it...ahaa. But the meal wasn't too bad and we managed to do it.
We watched part of the movie about Jesus' life (the kids version, not the Passion) and kinda talked about what the people were expecting as their Messiah, and when Jesus didn't end up being what they wanted, they were angry. On Palm Sunday, they were shouting Hosannah, meaning Deliverer, but only a couple days later, they chose to crucify him.
Well then the guys and i went out to try out the new basketball nets! Ahaa we had an INTENSE game of basketball, Greg and Kevin VS Juanita, Neil and Andy, and WE WON!! woo thanks to Andrews CRAZY shot from like halfcourt!
Also an announcement was made that there will be only 7 more weeks of youth group. Saturday, May 26th is our last youth group. We'll be stopping youth for the summer and starting up again in September. Kevin has an idea for something he wants to do in the summer, and we'll get more information on that soon.
Also, Junior Youth is OVER. Sorry guys for those of you into this idea, but we've decided to end it for now. Maybe we'll try again in the future, but for now, with only 7 more weeks of youth, we're going to stop JY.

Well another youth that wasn't by the book. We went to WAL MART (yes, WAL MART) to buy stuff for Kevin's Sunday School class. Actually, I'm rather jealous of those kids. We picked out some pretty awesome prizes!! Buuuttt for the most part we just sat around and played piano, drums, and guitar all night.

YAY NEIL! We went to see Neil's team play hockey and THEY WON! 8-5 We're quite proud of you Neil! Then we went to Safeways, and I found the flowers of my dreams!*NOTE TO EVERYONE, by your SISTERS flowers, even if you have no apparent reason to* We grabbed some food and headed back to the church. As we cooked our french fries and pizza pops, we totally forgot what time it was. It was a bit too late for a lesson but we went for a walk outside IN THE DARK. Thanks goodness we didn't run into any bears! Overall it was a fun night of tickling, Number 23 and 'counseling' as Nick said.

What a fun junior youth. Our first bonfire of 2007, marshmallow toasting contests and SARDINES!!! Congrats to Heather and Monika who were impossible to find in the last round. Even though some people were mean in SCARING THE YOUTH GROUP *cough Kevin cough*, the night was a success.

Our lesson this week was on Gideon and the Midianites. God used Gideon to restore worship among the Israelites. When the Midianites continued to take their food and hurt the Israelites, God helped them. But he took Gideons army of 32, 000 men and only picked 300 of them. God wanted to make sure that there was no mistaking the fact that the only reason the Israelites defeated the Midianites was because of God.

Lunar eclipse, solar eclipse...same thing, right?

Guess we haven't blogged in a while.. oopsie!

So last night 5 of us plus Kevin and Juanita's mom headed out to check out this so-called lunar eclipse that was happening at around 6:50pm. We also ended up FREEZING our toes off in the snow. So after many complaints we went back to the church for hot chocolate ETC.

2 Kings 22 and 23
King Josiah, at age 26, sent people to repair the temple. While it was being repaired, a scroll was found, containing the word of the Law. When King Josiah read the Law, he tore his clothes commanding the priest, a scribe, and a servant to inquire of the Lord to his people. He later got rid of all idols and slaughtered all the idolatrous people.

Hey gang. Last night we went bowling and boy, was it fun. Ahaa, I think out youth group has managed to make a new record for gutter balls. Then Kevin took the winning team out for spring rolls at Chinese Express. YUM. Last night our lesson was on prayer and what we should focus our prayers on. Prayer always seems to be focused on getting back to the image of a "perfect man" but our opinion of what a perfect man is, is different from what Jesus looks like or is. Kevin also talked about what kind of relationship God wants us to have with him.

Revelations 3:20 "Here I am. I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and him with me."

Yummy! Diapers! (Y)

*cough cough*...WELL. Not exactly appropriate for a youth group blog, but Kevin picked it, so oh well. You gotta admit, it's pretty awesome though! :D (If you're wondering about the discolouration on the diaper, I tried to blot out the name "Liam" that somebody wrote on the diaper)

We had our first junior youth group last night, but it ended up being more of a...food night.
1) Kevin made me and Kelsi melt and mush different types of chocolates and put them into clean diapers. We had to eat each type and guess which was which.
2) Dill pickle spitting contest! Hoorah. I think the score was 55-47. Juanita spitted the farthest with 14 squares!!
3) We ate persians and everyone was throwing marshmallows into each other's mouths! I'm not sure this was a game Kev invented, but it was...interesting.

Daniel 4 talks about King Nebuchadnezzar. King Neb. has a dream about a beautiful and prosperous tree which provided food for the animals. Then it was commanded that it was to be cut down but only the stump was to remain. Daniel had interpreted the dream and told Neb. that he was the tree, and because he was so proud, God was to drive King Nebuchadnezzar from his kingdom for 7 years unless he gave credit to God. At the end of seven years, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God and praised him and his kingdom was restored to him.

Snowpants&Boxers

Hey guys! Last night we ended up going TUBING...and it wasn't blistering cold like last time, thank goodness. We had alot of fun. At one point a few of us walked up the hill instead of using the chairlift, which was totally a brutal walk, and of course when we got up to the top, out of breath, we were told we aren't allowed to do that. Hah. Go us. Going down the hill was soo much fun because, depending on the position you're in, you end up spinning alot and it's so cold and crazy! We all just wish Kevin wouldn't shake the chairlift so much...
ALL RIGHT. The Bible study from last night was found in 1 Kings 22:1-38 (or so). The king, Jehoshaphat, was to go into battle with king Aram, and would only listen to the prophets that told him what he wanted to hear; the ones that told him he would win. When Micaiah the prophet came to Jehoshaphat, he prophesized that Jehoshaphat would fail, but Jehosaphat refursed to listen, and had Micaiah put in jail. In this story, God sends an angel to make the "feel-good" prophets continue their chorus. I, personally don't understand why God would send these people to tell Jehoshaphat lies. Kevin tried to explain, I sort of understand now, but not completely. Leave a comment with your opinion!!!

GIRLS RULE, BOYS DROOL! Haha no just kidding, but us girls DID totally beat the boys at four on a couch! :D By the end, almost nobody remembered each other's names, so it was basically a game of luck/chance! Hahaha we also played Moffia, and the Moffia ended up outnumbering/killing the townspeople.
Kevin's bible study was about when Jesus was telling the people parables about the seeds that grow on the path, rocky soil, thorny soil, and the good soil. This story is found in Matthew 13:4-18.
Kevin wanted us to watch this being told by Jesus in a video he had, so we got to go down to THE BASEMENT to watch it. I haven't been down there since I was seven!!

Our first youth group of 2007! And we haven't had youth group for over a month so Juanita and I are saying "FINALLY!!!"
Last night we decided to have our 'Belated Christmas Dinner' (I think) at Timbers restaurant. Yummy...the Chinese buffet was pretty good, if I say so my self! We all had a good time figuring out our fortunes in fortune cookies and using chopsticks...or ATTEMPTING to use them for some *cough*Neil*cough*. When we got back to Kevin's house, we tried to create a 'romantic mood' to sing and sit around in. Hahah.
The bible study last night was titled, "What is God's Will For Our Youth Group?". We had three questions to answer which were, What is our agenda? What do we default to if it fails? and I cannot remember the other question? For illustration, Kevin used the story of Jesus feeding 5000 men, found in Matthew 14:13-21. Jesus had wanted to find a place of solitude, but the crowds followed him wherever he went, so he has to change his agenda for them, took compassion on them, and healed and fed them.

Hey gang,
Unfortunately, I have bad news. Youth group is going to be canceled for most of December. We are hoping to start it as soon as possible, but everyone seems to be going on trips, NAMELY KEVIN! so we're just going to have to wait for youth group for a couple weeks. But DONT PANIC! Just because we wont be having youth for a little while, doesn't mean we can't still see one another this holiday season. Not having eachothers phone numbers is no excuse. Chlorine Barf

Yep, one of those nights. Seems like we get alot of those, but for once in the longest time...the girls outnumbered the guys!!! Actually, it was just Kevin, Juanita, and I, but we had fun getting lost. We just jumped in the car and drove around aimlessly. We were going to watch the light parade...actually, I don't know what happened to that idea, but we went to the mall instead, to eat. Juanita and I took Kevin into the Garage (HAHA) and then we went to Sears and tried on all this perfume that smelled like...chlorine barf, to be blunt. After all THAT fun, we decided to go to the movies to see "The Nativity Story". Okay, on Friday, Kevin saw this movie, and was soo into it and loved it completely. Yesterday we saw it, and he fell ASLEEP. Haha way to go, Kev. I wasn't very impressed with the movie. I guess it portrayed what really happened well, but I don't think it was very well done. Maybe I've seen too many crazy action movies with crazy special effects.

Tips on how to go to the bathroom at youth group

I don't know about the rest of you, but sitting in Kevin's living room was tiring! I had just gotten to youth group 15 minutes after getting home from Duluth, so I nearly fell asleep. But we had fun doing the Bible study, singing, and trying to be normal and un-distracted people anyways. After hanging out at Kevin's we walked to Seattle for coffee or hot chocolate...or whatever your preference.
Last week we studied Ephesians 6:16 "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." This week, still looking at this verse, we tried to figure out what faith is together. We helped ourselves by getting images of faith out of the Bible. One was a woman who believed that if she just touched Jesus' cloak, she could be healed from her bleeding. She did so, and Jesus said to her, 'Take heart, daughter, for your faith has healed you.' This passage is found in Matthew 9:20-22. There is also the story of the paralytic in Matthew 9:1-8. The paralytic's friends carried him to where Jesus was, cut a hole in the roof, and lowered the paralytic down. Jesus, after seeing their faith, said, 'Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven. Take up your mat and go home', and the man was healed.

Thank you to Andrew and Nick who actually CAME! To all you people with lame excuses for NOT coming, we had a BLAST with our egg roll-making skills. Unfortunatly, we walked away from this experience feeling like our stomachs were lined with grease. Oh well, it was totally worth eating about 14 egg rolls each.
So welcome to Kevin's sweatshop! I came about 2 hours early to help make the ingredients for the egg rolls...Kevin taught me how to chop "properly", so I feel quite chef-like now! Andrew and Nick came later and helped us do the folding for the egg rolls and wontons...or in Andrew's case, paper airplanes. We made approx. 90 egg rolls last night...and however many wontons. We even brought some to the neighbours who were completely dumbfounded by the fact that we gave egg rolls to them.
Kevin's topic tonight was the shield of faith. 'Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the firey darts of the wicked.' Ephesians 6:16 Firey darts, like skipping school!

Remembrance Day

Youth group was held at Neil's house last night, and at last minute he decided he wanted everyone to wear a funky hat! Everything from sombreros and Canada Day hats to pirate hats and paper sailor hats. Crazy.
Our bible study was on the shoes for "Dressing for Warfare"...'the shoes give us the readiness to share the gospel of peace.' (Ephesians 6:15)
To help Kevin illustrate this verse, we watched the movie 'End of the Spear' about a family that moves to the jungle in hopes of reaching out to a tribe there. It is said that no person has made contact with these people and come back alive. They soon find this to be true, but continued to try without giving up hope. (A little confusing at first, but a very good movie)

Well, we went swimming last night, and much to everyone's surprise, it was fun! We played water polo...of course my team got killed by Kevin's team, but that's to be expected when rivaling Kevin in any game. We sat in the sauna and burned to death, and Neil and Andrew learned to dive!...Sort of. Later on we went back to my house and had our Bible study on "The Shield of Faith". Yes, we're making our way through our topic "Dressing for Warfare". Last night we also had our fill of tomato soup...ugh. 10 cans of the stuff! Thumbs up to Greg who had 3 bowls of the junk, and Andrew who had two.

After having a meeting with Kevin in his living room for three hours, we have discussed the who, what, when, where, and why of Youth Group this year!
We've decided that our very first "Grand Opening" Youth event is going to be on September 9th. We're going to be going to the Sleeping Giant for a hike, swim, etc. etc. And yes, so far we will be sticking to Saturdays like last year! For our Bible Studies, we will be studying on how you should "Dress for Warfare", or some people like to plainly call it "The Armour of God"...

I have been thinking about my "ongoing ranting on certain issues in the group", and I want to apologize for not presenting my ideas in a structure of which we can discuss as a group. I was reflecting on a senerio of which things seemed to move in a fashion which was my way is the right way mindset and then took a turn towards a healthy group concensis.

Last Youth Group, after our bible study, as we still sat around the table, I proposed an idea, of which I had thought was a great idea, to take the group to the "Cascades" for a small hike. There were a few groans and then someone exclaimed, " I don't like that idea!" (or something along that line). There was an ackward moment as we all sat in limbo, around the table.

I then set up a structure of which we were to decide on what to do. It went like this:

1. We are going to start with the idea of going to the "Cascades".

2. You can give an alternative suggestion and we will add it to the choices.

3. You may not criticize the ideas... You may only give an alternative suggestion.

4. You may modify an idea already given and propose it as a different choice.

This structure helped us all present idea's. (rather then "Cascades or the Highway"). These were some of the ideas: Seatle Coffee House, Mc Donalds, Run around the Church Property:) , Cascades, McDonald's Drivethru and then Cascades.

No longer were we stuck sitting around one idea with the only choices of either to like the idea, pooh pooh on it, or remain aloof.

This was a long introduction to bring you into a mindset of which I would love to see us attack a tough issue of which 99% of people puberty and up deal with. How, and when does God want us to live out our "Romantic relationships"?

I want to invite the group or any individuals to present their take on "How and when does God want us to live out our "Romantic relationships"? But there is a catch you must follow the structure we used to find out what to do on the last youth group night. There is one rule I would like to add, if you do not wish to use this rule it would kind of defeat the purpose of issue we are working on.

1. We are going to start with the idea of "...".
2. You can give an alternative suggestion and we will add it to the choices.

I really like the analogy: We are only beggars at the Kings table. Some have potatoes in front of them. Some peas. Some brussel sprouts. There is no "self pride" in having the main meat dish sitting in front of you. We must share what is in front of us without claiming ownership of it. Thanks to the King and all honour given to Him.

This is a song that has inspired me during brussel sprout times. (you may know some of these people)

I know one of our recent bible studies was about resisting the temptation to sin. So, what if someone is already involved in something they know is wrong and can't seem to get out of it? What do they do then? What if the instant gratification seems more appealing than doing the right thing? How do you stop doing what you know is wrong?

Great Question George...

I am assuming that you are refering to the bible study which Paul stated...

1Co 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

I am in my own journey of wrapping my mind around this truth of God. My opionions, interpretations are evolving and changing continually. Remember, though we may not see this truth in our lives, by faith we believe that there is a perspective which is greater than our perspective.

Example : The elderly lady, with the last 100 dollar bill in her pockey, sitting infront of the slot machine may cry out to God, "save me from this temptation!".... As she is flat broke walking out of the Casino she shakes her fist at God saying, "You didn't come through for me".

From her perspective, God did not come through the way she saw fit.

There are profound points which Paul states in this verse

1. There are others who deal with what you are going through.
2. He is very interested, involved
3. Though you feel out of control, He is in full control
4. You have responsiblity
5. He has a talor made plan of escape for you.

My thoughts...

I was just invited to attended a "group therapy" dinner for victims dealing with a history sexual abuse issues. I observed so many things while there.

individuals shared, cried, laughed and as they did this it released others to share, cry, and laugh.

There was a real sense of healing in the room ( not a cure, but healing)

I could see God transforming these ugly secrets into an opportunity to fuse relationships betweem the individuals as well bring a sense of worship to a God who was very real. Most of all, it seemed that Gods spirit was revealing the very same principles...

1. There are others who deal with what you are going through.

3. Though you feel out of control, He is in full control
4. You have responsiblity
5. He has a talor made plan of escape for you.

Well, I went to check out the new church next to the shelter house. The name is "The Rock".

Wow, I was impressed with how "accessible" this church was. And also, how "accessible" the message was for "real people" with "real problems".

A music video was shown before the sermon. It is by Johnny Cash. If you do not know who Johnny Cash is then stop reading this.

Johnny Cash recorded this song before he died. At the end of his life Johnny realized that all his fame and fortune was skubalon compared to knowing God.

The 3 G's

I'll never forget the words a missionary spoke to a group of eager, young christian men, which I attended when I was the age of most of the youth group.

He said, "Beware of your appetite for the three G's! The appetite for these three G's are the # 1 things which have brought many leaders down in all of history, including today."

Of course we wanted to know what the three G's were.

He said, "The appetite for Gold, Glory, and Girls, are the most common appetites which have veared leader's and potential leader's focus of knowing and doing God's will.

I don't know what value this has on our youth group's blog site, seeing that the youth group is made up of mostly girls.

Can you come up with three appetites which girls can be aware of???

How about, the three M's... Money, Make up, Mates... (Deans)
three P's.... Popularity, Prosperity, Pigs or commonly know as boys (shannon)
three F's.... Fame, Fortune, Friends (shan for 2)

On a more serious note, it is interesting to see that Gold, Glory, and Girls are all good things which God has and does share with His people. Every good appetite and every good thing that God has created is a blessing. They become the very things which trip us up, if we do not worship and obey the Giver of these gifts. We must always keep these gifts in submission to God.

We are going to miss Andrew and James... They are going to Bolivia to work along side Terry and Pat Jenkes and their family. They will be helping build an addition on the seminary that Terry is teaching in. They will be leaving on the 26th of January. Andrew will be updating a blog daily on how his missions trip is going. To Meditate... Or Not To Meditate

I have always associated meditation with "eastern" religions. Lately, I have been challenged to look into the subject. After little thought, I said to myself, "wait a minute, lumping "meditation" as something only "eastern religions" do, is as absurd as lumping "breathing" as something "eastern religions" do.

It seems as though we already meditate...

We often clear our minds of all distraction, and visualize ... New clothes... Money... Friends... Romance... Vengeance.

It seems as though David is not performing an exercise of clearing his mind of all. Or emptying his mind of all. It seems as though he is filling his mind with a particular focus. What do you think??

We as a group have been spending time trying to reflect on our families, goals, passions and ambition in life. We are developing who and what we are. In other words, to find our "Identity".

To use Paul as an example, we look to how he viewed his "Identity".

3:5
circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee;
3:6
as to zeal , a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.

It sounds like Paul knew who he was and what he was.

3:7
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
3:8
More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,
3:9
and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
3:10
that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Paul laid down all that he was, "Identity", that he would find his "Identity" in Christ. Paul refers to the status of who and what he was as rubbish. Rubbish in the Greek is "skubalon". You'll have to figure out the definition by clicking on the word rubbish in the passage above.
